However, spices and herbs now considered exotic were actually available here five hundred years ago or even earlier. One such spice used by our manor folk for healing as early as the 16th century was anise seeds. Their homeland is considered the Middle East, but Roman campaigns introduced anise to peoples north of the Alps, and by the early Middle Ages, it was used throughout Europe, including the territory of present-day Latvia.

In Roman times, anise was a popular spice used daily, primarily for baking bread and, secondly, for chewing during gladiator fights to calm the nerves. Here, anise was mainly used to treat coughs, stomach, and nerve ailments.

Anise seeds have a unique taste and a sweet, aromatic scent created by their essential oil—anethole. These spicy seeds are an excellent source of minerals, containing calcium, iron, copper, potassium, manganese, zinc, and magnesium. For example, 100 g of dry seeds provide 462% of the daily required iron dose, and the potassium they contain helps control heart rate and blood pressure. The spice is also rich in vitamins C and A. Overall, the seeds are a renowned remedy for asthma, bronchitis, indigestion, colic, and nausea. They even help infants with colds.

Anise seeds, oil, and leaves are all used in cooking. The flavor of the seeds intensifies when toasted first. They are used in both savory and sweet meals, usually added at the end of cooking to prevent the oils in the seeds from evaporating prematurely. The spice pairs well with soups, sauces, breads, cakes, biscuits, and pastries. It is also added to the French drink Pastis, Spanish Ojen, Mediterranean Anisette, and others.

Anise for health:

*If you’re suffering from hiccups, chew some anise seeds for a while and drink a glass of water.

*Helps you breathe easier; it’s an ingredient in cough teas and medications.

*Helps teething infants—against diarrhea and bloating.

*Promotes digestion and soothes an upset stomach.

*Calms the nerves and harmonizes the heart rate.

*Spiritual effects:

~against a lack of energy and joy,

~against insomnia caused by stress,

~against bad dreams,

~against a lack of sexual interest; in Eastern countries, anise seeds are used to treat impotence.

USAGE: Goes well in soups, various sauces, bread, cakes, and pastries.
