In Far Eastern countries, it has another, almost official, name \u2013 the five-flavor berry (Wu Wei Zi). This is because all five flavors can be tasted in the schisandra berry: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent. <\/p>\n<p>In the wild, schisandra grows in the Russian Far East and elsewhere, as well as in northern China, Japan, and Korea. It&#8217;s cultivated in gardens in many places, including here in Latvia. Since ancient times, schisandra has been considered a source for maintaining vitality and youth. It&#8217;s said that if you regularly eat schisandra berries, you can live to a very old age without feeling the effects of aging. The most popular way to consume them is by chewing dried berries \u2013 this is how you can get the most benefits from the berry. At first, the taste seems quite peculiar and strong \u2013 it can even make your tongue tingle, but later on, most people grow to like it. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends chewing dried berries as a tonic and strengthening agent \u2013 5 grams per day for 100 consecutive days. In powder form, all five flavors seem to balance out, becoming harmonious. <\/p>\n<p>*Add the powder to salad dressings \u2013 it tastes especially good in those made with apple cider vinegar and those containing coconut oil.<\/p>\n<p>*You can make a delicious lemonade from both fresh and dried berries, but dried berries must first be crushed and soaked in water for a while after pouring. Afterwards, you can add mint or lemon balm leaves; fresh French tarragon also creates an interesting flavor nuance. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Aromatic milk for a calm evening finish<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1 tsp. dried schisandra berries <\/p>\n<p>1 tsp. ground cinnamon <\/p>\n<p>1 tsp. ground coriander <\/p>\n<p>250 ml milk (almond milk also tastes great)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. Place schisandra berries in a mortar and crush. Mix with cinnamon and coriander. <\/p>\n<p>2. Heat the milk and stir in the spice mixture; continue stirring for a couple of minutes to let the flavors infuse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Schisandra decoction for coughs (and respiratory problems associated with coughing)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pour 100 ml of water over 5 g of crushed dried berries, bring to a boil, and continue heating over low heat for 15 minutes.
