Description
Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng, is an evergreen shrub that grows in Asia and Africa. In the Indian subcontinent, it has been known and used for around 3,000 years as a medicinal plant, often combined with other regionally available plants. This plant contains chemical compounds that may help calm your mind, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and boost your immune system.
Ashwagandha is traditionally used to reduce stress, and it’s believed that this plant may help with insomnia, aging, and anxiety. However, there’s no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of such uses. It has also not been proven that ashwagandha is an effective remedy for COVID-19 treatment.
It has been observed that ashwagandha root may help in several ways: it can normalize cortisol levels (which are responsible for stress), improve memory, executive function (planning abilities, decision-making, etc.), concentration, and information processing speed.
You shouldn’t confuse this plant with common groundcherry, as both are widely known as winter cherry. Also, don’t confuse ashwagandha with American ginseng, Asian, or Siberian ginseng.
Recent studies warn against consuming more than 2-3 grams of ashwagandha per day.
