Description
Visually similar to dried cranberries, dried barberries are delicious, sweet-and-sour berries. They’re a classic addition to pilaf and other savory dishes that just beg for a sweet-sour, vibrant touch.
Barberries are known to help lower blood pressure, promote blood clotting, and moderately slow down heart rate. They also have a positive effect on your digestive system, promoting bile secretion and thus improving fat breakdown in the intestinal tract. Barberries are used to balance an agitated nervous system and relax smooth muscles. They’re also said to have antibacterial properties and have been studied for their anti-cancer effects.
You can use them quite widely in the kitchen – in both sweet and savory dishes – soups, sauces, meat dishes, and they’re especially delicious in pilaf, paired with cumin, coriander, and turmeric.
Barberries are rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, essential oils, pectins, and fiber.
