Sweet basil seeds

Price range: 3,00 € through 25,72 €

Sweet basil seeds are small, black seeds with a mild, nutty flavor. When soaked in water for at least 15 minutes, they develop a pleasant jelly-like texture, which is why these seeds are often added to drinks and desserts, such as the milkshake-like dessert falooda, popular in India. In South Asia, these seeds are also added to buko pandan and halo-halo, popular jelly desserts, while in the Middle East they are often added to karkadeh tea, and in North Africa – to the rice drink horchata. Besides drinks and desserts, basil seeds can also be added to salads, soup, yogurt, porridge, and various pastries.

To add sweet basil seeds to your food, it’s recommended to soak them in water beforehand. Soaking times vary in different recipes, but most recipes suggest 30 minutes to 2 hours. After draining the water, the seeds can be mixed into the dish or used as a garnish. If you’re making pastries, the seeds can also be added in ground form.

Please note: sweet basil seeds are different from holy basil seeds, which are more commonly used in teas and dietary supplements. Holy basil seeds are slightly larger and have a more bitter taste.
